Public Service is Calling You
I have been asked about our substitute shortage, note that I did not say substitute teacher shortage, a lot recently. We absolutely have a shortage of substitutes, whether it be for teachers or for any of our classified staff. Requirements always come up in those conversations so I thought it would be a good time to put some information out.
First of all, if you are really serious about subbing in any capacity, please look at the Nebraska Department of Education website under certification or contact NDE to get specifics about what you will be required to do to obtain certification. I will share with you the general requirements that will tell you if you are close or not.
As a substitute for any of the classified staff, you simply need to have a high school diploma and you will have to do a background check with the school district you wish to sub in. This will qualify you to sub as a para-educator, office help, custodian, or kitchen help. These subs are needed and can be very rewarding because you get to work so closely with the kids in these roles.
If you have a minimum of 60 credit hours of college course work, you may qualify to serve as a substitute teacher. Those 60 hours can be in any area but you will also need one Education class and a Human Relations course in order to get certified to be a substitute teacher. This also comes with a background check and a letter from the district you wish to sub in.
If you would like more information or would like to discuss the possibility of subbing in our school district, please contact the school and we can help you through the process.
